Job Prep: The Four Year Plan to Career Success
Freshman Year:
- Make an appointment with the career advisor
to discuss your general career/life goals, especially
if you are an undecided major and unclear of future
goals
- Work with the career advisor to discuss possible
majors of interest, or what you can do with the
major you declared

strengths and career interests

Sophomore Year:
- Meet with the career advisor to develop some
short and long-term goals for your remaining time
at college
- Attend all career fairs for furthering your
career options after you graduate " Schedule a
meeting to begin planning for a co-op or internship
in your field of study
- Get involved with clubs and organizations to
develop your leadership skills
- Attend the Academic Office Interviewing and
Resume workshops
- Enroll in elective courses that will give you
the skills employers are seeking (language, computer,
communication, international business, web design,
etc.)
- Update your resume
- With career advisor, explore the career options
in the majors you are considering
Junior Year:
- Meet with the career advisor for a more thorough search on occupations of interest
- Update your resume and have it critiqued through the available resume critiquing services
- Gain work experience through team leadership, research opportunities, class involvement, work-study, or extracurricular activities
- Attend career fairs for the campus and your department sponsored career fairs
- Research graduate and/or medical school options
- Begin to prepare for and take entrance exams
- Take the GREs, MCATs, or other required entrance exams in the Spring
- Work on finding your internship, co-op or summer job
- Join professional organizations in your field, and find out how to network with professionals who can be great job sources
- Participate in the mock interview workshops to sharpen your personal presentation skills
- Check with your advisor to be sure you are on track with graduation
Senior Year:
- Develop your portfolio of professional quality career-related projects and assignments
- Perfect your resume
- Attend all available special events (seminars, lectures, campus events, etc.) Great networking tools
- Set up your credential file and begin collecting letters of reference
- Perfect your interviewing skills and take advantage of on-campus recruiting
- Develop a great cover letter to include with your resume
- Research companies or grad schools using our career resources
- Network with professionals in the field: GT alumni, job shadowing, information interviewing
- Design business cards for yourself; make sure they are professional
- Check the BME Academic Office webpage for job and internship listings
- Plan to keep in touch after graduation, to mentor other students and share success stories!
