Full Time and Part Time Student Considerations
Q1. How many hours are needed to be a full time student?
You will need to take at least 12 hours in any semester, including summer, to be considered a full time student. Full time status is based on attempted hours.
Q2. How many hours am I allowed to take?
The maximum number of hours a student is allowed to take during Fall and Spring Semesters is based on Academic Standing:
- Good Standing: 21 semester hours
- Warning: 16 semester hours
- Probation: 14 semester hours
The maximum number of hours a student is allowed to take during Summer:
- Good Standing: 16 semester hours
- Warning: 14 semester hours
- Probation: 12 semester hours
Note: Students wishing to take more than the allowed
hours must submit a
petition
to the faculty.
Q3. Do I need to be a full time student?
Co-op - Co-op students are required to be full time.
Exceptions can be made in the summer if necessary. Please
direct questions to the
Professional
Practice Office.
Financial Aid / Loans / Scholarships - If you have loans,
scholarships or financial aid usually need to be full
time during fall and spring, but not always during the
summer. Students needs to verify this with the
Financial
Aid Department.
Health Insurance - If students are using their parent's health insurance, the insurance company may require the student to be full time (except during the summer semester.) Students need to check with each individual insurance company.
HOPE - Hope does not require that students be full time.

required to be full time students. Questions about this
should be directed to the
Office
of International Education (OIE).
Other - Other things to think about are car insurance (if you are getting a discounted rate for being a full time student), etc.
Parents / Guardians - Students should always consult their parents or guardians if they intend to be part time students.
